- Protecting Your Payment Cards
Payment cards such as ATM, debit, credit and EBT cards make paying for things easier and more efficient, but they are also common targets for fraud. Criminals use discreet scam devices like pinhole cameras, skimmers, and fake keypads to steal card information and PINs at ATMs, point-of-sale terminals and gas pumps, often in just seconds and without the victim’s knowledge. Here’s how to protect yourself…
You can reduce your risk by inspecting card readers for signs of tampering, shielding your PIN when entering it and using well-lit, high-traffic machines whenever possible. Choosing chip-enabled or tap-to-pay options over magnetic stripes adds another layer of security, as these technologies are harder for criminals to exploit. Other essential habits for preventing financial loss would be to regularly monitor your accounts, set up transaction alerts, use strong, unique PINs and never share your PIN. Extra caution is especially important in tourist areas and when paying at gas pumps, where skimming devices are more commonly found.
If you suspect fraud or believe your card information has been compromised, contact your financial institution right away. Other quick actions, such as changing your PINs or freezing accounts, can help protect your funds and prevent further unauthorized activity.
